Latino Leaders Magazine names Disan LLP Founder and Partner Margarita Sanchez on its list of top Latino and Latina attorneys based on power, relevance, and success.
WASHINGTON, DC.– January 19, 2016 – Latino Leaders Magazine recently released its December 2015/January 2016 issue containing the publication’s anticipated list of ‘The 25 Most Influential Hispanic Lawyers’ in the United States. Among them, Margarita Sanchez—a dual US-Colombian lawyer who made headlines less than two years ago when she left a large, well-known firm to launch Disan LLP, an international law firm based in Washington D.C.
According to Latino Leaders, “this is not a merit based list; is actual power, relevance, and success rate. The list includes attorneys across a wide range of fields, but what they have in common is the impact each has made in his or her specialty and in their community.” Sanchez fits the bill. She specializes in international legal matters throughout the Americas with a focus on dispute resolution and global anti-corruption. In dispute resolution, Sánchez has served as counsel of numerous high-profile cases, including multi-million and multi-billion dollar disputes representing multinationals and sovereign Latin American states. In her anti-corruption work, she counsels multinational companies on compliance matters, including the design, implementation, assessment of anti-corruption compliance programs, as well as investigations of corruption allegations.
She is also committed to inspiring and propelling success for Latino students and young Latina lawyers. Until 2014, Sanchez served as a Latina Commissioner with Hispanic National Bar Association’s (HNBA) Latina Commission on the Status of Latinas in the Legal Profession, a commission created to encourage Latinas to enter the legal profession and educate the public about these Latina role models. Sanchez is also deeply involved in her community, offering pro bono services and helping countless Latino immigrants with critical legal needs. She has represented victims of domestic violence and violent crimes to help them obtain legal status in the U.S.
Sanchez’s past personal recognitions include being named a leading practitioner in the U.S. and abroad by several publications including Chambers Global and Colombia’s Revista Dinero; making Latinvex’s 2015 list of ‘The Top 50 Female International Lawyers for Latin America’; and being named a ‘Top Lawyer Under 40’ by the Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA) in 2013. Under her leadership, Disan received the Chambers & Partners award for Outstanding Firm for Furthering Women’s Advancement only a little over a year after opening its doors. She earned her Masters in Law (LL.M) from American University, and obtained her J.D. (Abogado) from Universidad de Norte (Colombia).
